SUMMARY:The King's Singers
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 10\, 2017 8:00pm\n\n\n\nPart of The King’s Singers 50th Anniversary Season and Cathedral Concerts 25th Anniversary Season\n“Their vocal production was effortless\, stylistically varied and beautifully blended\, even in the most complex polyphony.” Washington Post (DC\, USA) \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n  \nThe King’s Singers were officially born on May 1st 1968\, formed by six recently-graduated choral scholars from King’s College\, Cambridge. Their vocal line-up was (by chance) two countertenors\, a tenor\, two baritones and a bass\, and the group has never wavered from this formation since. \nWhat really distinguished the group in its early years was its musical diversity. The King’s Singers were a weekly fixture on prime-time television\, celebrating popular music never usually touched by choral ensembles\, and their unique British charm\, combined with their musical craft\, captured audiences’ hearts the world over. The group has consistently been welcomed on the world’s great stages throughout its history – from London’s Royal Albert Hall to the Opera House in Sydney or New York’s Carnegie Hall – as well as being ambassadors for musical excellence across the globe. Two Grammy® Awards\, an Emmy® Award\, and a place in Gramophone magazine’s inaugural Hall of Fame sit among the numerous accolades bestowed upon the group. \nThis love of diversity has always fuelled The King’s Singers’ commitment to creating new music. A panoply of commissioned works by many of the supreme composers of our times – including Sir John Tavener\, Toru Takemitsu\, John Rutter\, Luciano Berio\, Nico Muhly\, György Ligeti and Eric Whitacre – sits alongside countless bespoke arrangements in the group’s extensive repertoire. The group is determined to spread the joy of ensemble singing\, and leads workshops and residential courses all over the world each season. \nThe world may have changed a lot in the fifty years since the original King’s Singers came together\, but today’s group is still charged by the same lifeblood – one that wants to radiate the joy singing brings every day\, and that want to give life to audiences with their virtuosity and vision for an exciting musical future. \n\n\n\nPatrick Dunachie Countertenor\nTimothy Wayne-Wright Countertenor\nJulian Gregory Tenor\nChristopher Bruerton Baritone\nChristopher Gabbitas Baritone\nJonathan Howard Bass \n  \nProgram \n\nShir hamma’alot le David – Salamone Hebreo Rossi (c. 1570 – 1630)\nSurge\, propera amica mea – Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (c. 1525 – 1594)\nNigra sum\, sed formosa – Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina\nSicut lilium inter spinas – Giovanni Pierluigi da PalestrinaLagrimas de mi Consuelo – Juan Vasquez (c. 1500 – c. 1560) \nThe Prayer of King Henry VI – Dr Henry Ley (1887 – 1962)\nIn Manus Tuas – Thomas Tallis (c. 1505 – 1585)\nSing joyfully – William Byrd (c.1539 – 1623) \nVersa est in luctum – Alonso Lobo (c. 1555 – 1617) \nBasiez-moi! – Josquin des Prez (c. 1450 – 1521)\nPaisible domaine – Orlandus Lassus (c. 1532 – 1594)\nRevecy venir du Printans – Claude le Jeune (c. 1528 – 1600) \nEl fuego – Mateo Flecha (1481 – 1553) \nIntermission \nMusica Dei donum – Orlandus Lassus (c. 1532 – 1594) \nDas ist je gewißlich wahr – Heinrich Schütz (1585 – 1672)\nInnsbruck\, ich muss dich lassen – Heinrich Isaac (c. 1450 – 1517)\nFrisch auf\, last uns ein gut’s Glas Wein – Hans Leo Hassler (1564 – 1612) \nLa Guerre – Clément Janequin (c. 1485 – 1558) \n \nWelcomed by

SUMMARY:Libera
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, August 9 at 8:00pm\nExperience this world-renowned group in the heavenly\nsetting of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis.\n  \n \nThe boys who make up the South London based vocal group Libera have been described as “normal” and “ordinary”. However\, as their recordings and performances demonstrate\, the music they produce is anything but. \nFamiliar to audiences across the world\, the boys have an original sound\, which is at once both ancient and modern. Their distinctive white robes symbolize the traditional origins of their style – yet their music reaches across the generations to a new mainstream audience. Libera’s success in album charts around the world bears witness to the extraordinary appeal of this unique ‘boy band’. Enchanting audiences wherever they go\, they have attracted an enthusiastic fan base in many countries\, particularly the US & Canada\, Russia\, UK\, Japan\, the Philippines\, Taiwan\, Singapore and South Korea. \nIn the US & Canada\, Libera are known through their concert tours and TV appearances including nationwide PBS specials\, NBC ‘Today’ show and ‘The Tonight Show.’ The boys had their US debut at the Kennedy Center Honors\, where they performed in front of the President and a hall full of celebrities in a moving tribute to honoree Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. This was followed by Libera’s participation in the Papal Mass at the climax of Pope Benedict XVI’s first visit to the USA. Performing to a capacity congregation of 65\,000 at New York’s Yankee Stadium; Libera were the only British artists to take part in this historical event. \n

SUMMARY:Friar Alessandro
DESCRIPTION:The Voice from Assisi\nFriday\, May 12 at 8:00pm\n“Behind every successful tenor is … a story. Pavarotti was a larger than life character who understood how to popularize sometimes difficult music. Bocelli overcame his blindness to become a superstar and has managed to bridge the divide between popular and classical music. Friar Alessandro fits very well into this tradition.”\nFrom “The Singing Friar”\nBritish TV Documentary \n  \n \n  \nWhen you meet Friar Alessandro Brustenghi you realize straight away there is something beatific\, possibly angelic about him. Slight and sweet in his brown Friar’s garb. When we meet in the Porziuncola-Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli/St. Mary of the Angels in Assisi he talks about the troubled passionate saint with empathy. \nLike St. Francis\, Friar Alessandro\, 34\, has multiple missions and was conflicted in his past. His journey to his final vow\, was a precarious soul search\, like St. Francis himself. \nFor a long time his music and his faith were hanging in the balance. Fortunately the release of Voice of Assisi shows that ultimately neither was sacrificed. His voice is pure and pain soaked. The songs heartbreakingly beautiful. Alessandro’s eyes have a permanent twinkle. In his voice you hear the essence of who he is\, of being filled with love. \nRead More about Friar Alessandro \nSupport for this concert provided by Charles & Shirley Drury & Family and Schlapprizzi Law

The Catholic and Anglican composers are from the renaissance period\, the orthodox are modern. It is interesting to hear how the sacred mood is similar between these composers\, yet it is achieved by quite different stylistic means. This difference is fascinating to me\, not least because these texts are central to every Christian of every period.” Peter Phillips

SUMMARY:The Boston Camerata
DESCRIPTION:The Play of Daniel\nTuesday\, January 31\, 2017 at 8:00pm\n  \n \n  \nThe Ludus Danielis\, or Play of Daniel\, is a powerful medieval mystery play composed eight centuries ago in Beauvais\, France. \nThe Boston Camerata’s recent new production of The Play of Daniel\, edited\, staged and directed by Anne Azéma\, renews and transforms this classic work of early music theater. It brings together music and movement\, theater and liturgy\, light and shadow\, to retell the biblical story of the young prophet for today’s audiences. Acclaimed by the public and selected as “best of the year” by Boston critics\, Camerata’s Daniel is now coming to St. Louis. \nThe Boston Camerata will be joined by singers from Rosati-Kain High School and Webster University in this one of a kind theatrical event. \n“Lyrical and poignant … timeless spiritual message.”\n–- The Boston Globe \n“Unexpected energy and immediacy … memorable”\n–- The Boston Musical Intelligencer \n“Enchanting … a pure delight”\n–- The Boston Classical Review \n

SUMMARY:Stile Antico
DESCRIPTION:Holiday Concert\nWednesday\, November 30\, 2016 at 8:00pm\n  \n \n• A favorite with concert-goers and the most requested! Always a beautiful evening of song! \n• 2009 Gramophone Award Winners for Early Music with their CD\, Song of Songs \n• Performing music from their latest recording\, A Wondrous Mystery \nA Wondrous Mystery\nStile Antico’s Christmas program is a delightful mixture of the formal and the informal\, of sophisticated polyphony and folk-like dances. Alongside a glorious\, richly scored Christmas mass by the Flemish composer Clemens non Papa\, Stile Antico performs traditional old-German carols and motets\, many of them still familiar today. Amongst the highlights are Eccard’s infectiously joyful Übers Gebirg Maria geht and Praetorius’ double-choir Magnificat\, which includes the carols In dulci jubilo and Josef lieber\, Josef mein. Based on the same Josef lieber melody\, and neatly joining the two strands of the program\, is Resonet in laudibus by the Flemish-born\, German-resident master Orlandus Lassus. An irresistibly festive performance! \nMichael Praetorius/Melchior Vulpius: Es ist ein Ros entsprungen\nJacobus Clemens non Papa: Pastores quidnam vidistis\nJohannes Eccard: Ubers Gebirg Maria geht\nJacob Handl (Gallus): Canite tuba\nClemens non Papa: Kyrie (Missa Pastores quidnam vidistis)\nHieronymous Praetorius: Magnificat quinti toni\nClemens non Papa: Gloria (Missa Pastores quidnam vidistis)\nEccard: Vom Himmel hoch\nClemens non Papa: Credo (Missa Pastores quidnam vidistis)\nHandl (Gallus): Mirabile misterium\nMichael Praetorius: Ein Kind geboren in Bethlehem\nClemens non Papa: Sanctus & Benedictus (Missa Pastores quidnam vidistis)\nHans Leo Hassler: Hodie Christus natus est\nClemens non Papa: Agnus Dei (Missa Pastores quidnam vidistis)\nOrlandus Lassus: Resonet in laudibus

SUMMARY:Polish Baltic Philharmonic Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, February 29\, 2016 at 8:00 PM\nErnst Van Tiel\, Conductor\nFounded in 1945 on the heels of postwar Polish independence\, The Polish Baltic Philharmonic is the largest music institution in northern Poland. The orchestra is visited not only by local music-lovers but by cosmopolitan Polish and international patrons alike. This is the place for those who enjoy art of the highest quality. The Philharmonic organizes symphonic concerts\, recitals\, and chamber music soirées performed by the most prominent Polish musicians as well as by many world-famous artists. \nIn the late 19th and early 20th centuries\, Gdańsk\, then German-administered Danzig\, held the international spotlight as a point of contention between Germany\, a budding independent Poland\, and those proud locals who saw Gdańsk as an independent city-state\, the crown jewel of the Baltic Sea. Throughout the mid-20th century\, Gdańsk became the primary seaport of Communist Poland. Littered with charming architecture and wizened thinkers\, Gdańsk became the location for the first initiatives and protests in the 1970s and 1980s of the Solidarnoœæ [Solidarity] movement\, chaired by future president Lech Wałęnsa. This movement would soon lead to the breakdown of Communism in Poland\, and contributed to the dissolution of the Second World as it was known throughout the Cold War Era. \nAll Tchaikovsky Program (subject to change): \nRomeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture in B Minor \nViolin Concerto in D Major\, Op. 35\nfeaturing Jaroslaw Nadrzycki – Violinist \nSymphony No. 5 in E Minor\, Op. 64 \n  \nWelcomed by \nSteinway is the Official Piano of Cathedral Concerts
